Think you know social? Think again.

Unpleasant Truth No. 1:

ENGAGEMENT CAN’T BE SEEN IN DOLLARS

Until Lady Gaga, Skittles had the record for most likes and comments on a single Facebook post. Did it boost sales? “Anybody who says they can track that is in a bubble,” says Michael Lebowitz, CEO of Big Spaceship, the ad firm behind the Skittles campaign.

Unpleasant Truth No. 2:

SOCIAL IS JUST PR IN OVERDRIVE

Two weeks before McDonald’s was to go on a hiring spree, it released videos of employees praising their “McJobs.” The goal: preempt criticism. On hiring day, 98% of social talk was either positive or neutral. Spin wins!

Unpleasant Truth No. 3:

MONEY CAN’T BUY EVERYTHING

To coincide with a daylong campaign, Kraft asked Klout to change the name of its social influence measurement “Klout score” to “fun score.” The answer: no. In social, platforms hold the power.

Unpleasant Truth No. 4:

FACEBOOK ISN’T A MEGAPHONE

Brands with more than 1 million fans reach only 3% to 5% of them a day, estimates Jeff Widman of analytics platform PageLever. To find out why, Widman asked social marketers if they ever visit fan pages as users. Their reply: “Oh, never.”

Unpleasant Truth No. 5:

YOU’RE BEING WATCHED

A big brand recently broke Facebook’s rule against using a post as a sweepstakes. Reps were in touch within an hour. “They don’t want brands gaming the system for engagement,” the brand’s rep admitted.

Unpleasant Truth No. 6:

CONTENT RARELY GOES VIRAL

Stop thinking in those terms, says Microsoft Research’s Duncan Watts: “Rather than ideas propagating for generations, almost everything terminates within one degree of the seed. If you want something to spread, generate an enormous number of seeds.”

Some insight from Seth Godin:

Most amateurs and citizens believe that marketing is the outer circle.

Marketing = advertising, it seems. The job of marketing in this circle is to take what the factory/system/boss gives you and hype it, promote it and yell about it. This is what so many charities, politicians, insurance companies, financial advisors, computer makers and well, just about everyone does.

The next circle in has so much more leverage. This is the circle of telling a story that resonates with a tribe. This is the act of creating alignment, of understanding worldviews, of embracing and elevating the weird. Smart marketers in this circle acknowledge that their product or service isn’t for everyone, but bend over backwards to be sure that some people will be able to fall in love with it.

The next circle in easily overlooked. This is the act of changing what surrounds the actual product or service, adding enough usability and support and atmosphere that the perception of the product itself changes. Zappos did this for shoes. Ikea almost willfully goes in the other direction with its furniture assembly and delivery approach. When you go to an expensive restaurant, you’re buying far more than what the chef cooked. Products and services are only commodities if you treat them that way.

And the innermost circle is the product or service itself. When the thing you sell has communication built in, when it is remarkable and worth talking about, when it changes the game–marketing seems a lot easier. Of course, that’s because you did the marketing when you invented the thing, saving you the expense and trouble of yelling about it.

When in doubt, when your marketing isn’t working, the answer is easy: go one circle in.

- Seth Godin

Headliner How It Works from headliner.fm on Vimeo.

Headliner was started to help artists reach each other’s fans. The idea worked so well that non-musicians took note. Thanks to your ongoing support, we have now opened up Headliner for everyone in all industries!

A Few Things to Note

The service will still function the same. You create a message to share, we match it with a compatible community, and once your message is posted to their networks, we provide you details on the engagements so you can continue the conversation with your new audience. However, a few details have been customized to make Headliner work for everyone.

Band Bucks are now Karma Cash

We believe that accepting promotions isn’t just about earning rewards but it’s about helping each other out, so now Band Bucks have a new name, Karma Cash! We are a great community because you are excellent to each other – keep it up!

Multiple Genres/Categories

We’ve added new functionality that will help you describe who you are and what you do more specifically. Using this information will help us connect you with promotions that you and your fans will like. Head over to your settings now and set it up. To set up your industry, click “Settings”, next to “Your Industries” click “Edit.”

Musicians Only

We realize that some of you may want to preserve your musicians-only experience. Using your Email Notifications, help us determine what what types of promotions you would like to receive. If you are not interested in receiving promotion requests from other types of influencers, click “Account Settings”, “Email Notifications” and make sure the second box is unchecked.

We hope that you will like the changes and make the new members of our community feel right at home. We have tried to integrate the changes as efficiently as possibly, but we understand if you have questions, concerns or comments. Please reach out to support@headliner.fm we will get back to you asap.

Headliner CEO Mike More recently contributed to a piece on How (and Why) Musicians Are Using Twitter for Read Write Web. Check it out below and consider some of his points as you manage your band’s social marketing strategy.

“Asking Twitter followers to buy one’s latest album is probably not a good approach, warns More. “That doesn’t provide any value for your fans. It’s a demand.” Instead, the experts recommend having conversations with fans, soliciting their feedback when appropriate and doing things like host group interviews via Twitter. When the opportunity arises for fans to enter their credit card information, those that want to will do it.”

RootMusic analyzed how the top 250 musicians on Facebook work the platform and posted the results with the chart below.

Some key findings you should try to apply to your own band’s use of social media:

7 out of 10 of the most popular pages on FB were musician pages

On average, the top 250 artists post 1.6 times a day

Fans engage with the Facebook wall more than the Band Page (35% vs 31%)

The top 3 genres were Pop (29%), Rock (28%) and Hip Hop (12%)

The key take-aways as always are: music is one of the most popular types on content on the social web and artists that engage their fan base consistently are the most successful. Headliner can help you amplify your message by introducing you to audiences that already like music like yours through compatible musicians. Where you take that introduction is entirely up to you, but hopefully this data will inspire you to engage them directly and frequently.
