Earlier this year, rapper/producer and Headliner.fm user Blue Jones made a short video guide to using Headliner.fm. In the video, Blue Jones demonstrates how to use most of the features on our site. The new Create a Promotion screen makes it easier than ever to reach new fans. Here’s what you need to know:

  • The new Create a Promotion automatically matches you with compatible artists who are likely to accept your promotions. You can still select artists yourself or deselect our suggestions, but the default setting is to select a group of artists we think are a good fit you.
  • We improved the network selection tool. Before, if you didn’t want your promotion to go out on all three social networks, you were limited to promoting on a single network. Now, you can choose to send your promotions to two networks at a time. Want to run promotions on Twitter and Facebook, Facebook and Myspace or Myspace and Twitter? Now you can!

Since most bands and artists on Facebook use Facebook pages, we designed Headliner.fm to connect to pages rather than personal accounts. This was fine for the majority of our users, but unfortunately artists who had personal accounts and no pages were caught in a bind. Sure, they could create a new Fan Page, but that account would start with 0 fans and they would be unable to leverage their existing fan base on Headliner.fm.

Luckily, that problem is now solved. Yesterday, Facebook released an update that allows users to convert their personal accounts into fan pages with a few clicks. More info here

Over at Hypebot, Bas Grasmayer has an excellent article about what he calls the “Eco-system” approach to marketing. Grasmayer’s approach focuses on mobilizing fans to spread music by word of mouth in what he calls “non-linear communications.” Here’s a taste:

“Retention

 

This is where you start stimulating the non-linear communication. Treat every listener as a guest to your house party. If you don’t introduce them to others, you’ll be the center of attention all the time, but you can’t talk to everyone at the same time, so people are likely to get bored and leave. The key to a successful party is connecting the strangers, so they can have fun together. You’re still the center of the ecosystem, but you’re not the only person to communicate to. The communication becomes non-linear!”

Ryan Van Etta: Headliner launched in late 2009—what are some things you’ve learned along the way since then?

MM: The most important thing we learned is to listen to our users. Headliner is here for one reason—to serve their needs period. We have just partnered with Soundcloud so our users can check out other bands music quickly and easily before they accept promotions from other artists. This was the number one request by the bands who use Headliner so we implemented it quickly. The SoundCloud partnership allows bands to syndicate their music to Facebook and Twitter—Headliner is becoming an artist-run content syndication network on top of Facebook and Twitter.
