Headliner of the Day: Sham MCs

One of the great things about music is the way it can unite people from all over the world. It has often been said to be a universal language. At Headliner, we support indie artists of all kinds, from all over the world. In the past few months, we’ve come to know and dig Sham MCs, a Syrian rap group who gets the DIY indie grind, the importance of fan engagement and promotes positivity and consciousness among diverse people through their unique mix of Middle Eastern sounds and Hip Hop. They are walking their talk; in their own words: “Headliner fm taught me, Don’t live to survive, live to be worldwide.”

    More on Sham MCs:

The Sham MCs would be taking the Syrian hip-hop scene by storm — if they weren’t creating the genre as they go.
The group is all about crossing barriers — rapping in both English and Arabic and mixing hip-hop with the sounds of traditional Arabic music, while avoiding the lyrical clichés of both genres.
The nine-member crew is a mix of Syrian Christians, Muslims and followers of new age spirituality. They’re taking advantage of more accessible recording technology, and the social media tools that have fueled uprisings in other Middle Eastern countries, to spread their music to a Syrian audience they say is hungry for hip-hop.
MC Mic Son, who learned English from an online Ebonics course, took us into the studio during a recording session for the Sham MC’s second album.

Support their fund raising campaign to finish their album on IndieGogo. Info below.

The Eyes Have It: 84 Million U.S. Internet Users Viewed 42.6 Billion Videos in October

The take-away from this eye-popping data is this: as a musician you should be sharing music videos to get your fans’ attention and drive traffic and awareness to your sites. If you want to throw in a cat or two, like Devo did for their album listening party, it might not hurt. The data is from comScore, but Hypebot did a nice summary. Check it out and then bust that camera out.

    Via Hypebot:

New comScore data shows 84 million U.S. Internet users watched online videos in October for an impressive average of 21.1 hours per viewer. The total U.S. Internet audience viewed 42.6 billion videos, an all time high. Google sites, driven by YouTube, ranked #1 with 161 million unique viewers and 20.9 billion videos viewed. But Facebook, which was barely a blip on the video viewing charts just a couple of years ago, came in at #2 with 59.8 million viewers.

    Headliner of the Day: Endway

    Endway

Boston based band ENDWAY is composed of Kevin McHugh (Guitar, Vocals), Dennis Walsh (Bass, Vocals), Andrea Belfiore (Drums), Morgan Dorr (Lead Vocals, Guitar) and Brian Lempert (Keys, Vocals). The band has four albums; “Endway” 2005, “Action” 2008, “Running Man” 2009 and “Colors” which was finished in the fall of 2010 and digitally released by Tainted Blue in the first quarter of 2011.

After the band’s inception in 2004 the guys were nearly homeless. NowENDWAY has been featured on five different MTV shows including The Real World, Road Rules, and The Hills and has played performances from historic Fenway Park to The House of Blues to SXSW. Of ENDWAY, CBS Boston writes “pulling for comparison to Maroon 5, INXS and The Police, this band creates a truly original sound that is bound for your music collection.  Every appearance they make seems to be magical.”

Endway have clearly hit on a winning combination of indie rock and radio-ready pop. The band recently used Headliner to promote their latest album, Colors through a video premiere and trivia contest.

Fans were invited like the band on Facebook, watch a new video and submit their answers to trivia questions that were sent out as Headliner promotions. Artists were very supportive of the idea and Endway managed to reach thousands of fans, many of whom signed up for their email newsletter and a chance to win Colors ahead of its release date. Their campaign help them reach well over 3 million new fans through more than 300 bands that cross-promoted them through Headliner recommendations.

Connected Consumer Affinity, or Get To Know Your Fans

We all want to think of music as art, and fans as devotees with great taste, but if we ignore that music is a business and fans are consumers, we risk never being able to quit our day jobs. Ideally, we would all be discovered overnight and get our own “Behind the Music” special simply for being kick-ass artists. But for many indie bands, promotion is like a second job. These days, moving units means getting to know your fans as well as you would like them to know and love your music.

Mashable recently posted a piece with a few tips on building connections with your consumers. How can you apply  these to your band and the business of promoting your music?

Check out the entire article HERE.

    “Nine Laws of Consumer Affinity”

    1. Identify where connected consumer attention is focused.

    2. Define a higher purpose — genuine intentions that will attract connected consumers and give them something to align with.

    3. Establish an identity and a presence worthy of affiliation. Give people something to believe in — something exciting to be a part of.

    4. Design your engagement strategies to be beneficial and shareable — this is, after all, about shared experiences.

    5. Localize the value, content, storefront and engagement program to match the culture and activity within each direct-to-consumer (D2C) community.

    6. This isn’t a power play; stay consistent and dedicated through meaningful interaction.

    7. Remain true to the original mission and intention. Do not be swayed by short-term temptations.

    8. Recognize and reward community participants — reciprocity is a strong pillar of community relationships.

    9. The adaptive business will listen, learn and change based on the needs of the connected consumer. That way, a brand will consistently stay relevant and valuable.

    Billboard Magazine’s 10 Top Music Start Ups, 2011– #4: Headliner.fm

The cover story for this week’s Billboard Magazine is The 10 Top Music Startups of 2011, and Headliner.fm is very happy to be ranked #4 on the list by the industry bible’s editors.

In the write up, Anthony Bruno and Glenn Peoples cite how Headliner.fm was able to identify and solve a challenge facing many independent musicians: marketing. Speaking with Mike More, they highlight Headliner’s ability to apply the new social web to the old opening act model using its unique recommendation platform. It also points to Headliner’s member base tripling in growth as proof of how Headliner successfully uses the social web’s open graph to help artists of all kinds reach new audiences with targeted, organic messages.

But, don’t take it from us. Click the article to enlarge it and read for yourself. There are a lot of exciting developments in the works at Headliner. Although we came in at #4 this time, you better believe we’ve got our eyes on the #1 spot. Thanks again to every Headliner.fm member and all the connected fans that have supported the product and make our collective success possible.

The Cost of Making a Hit Song? $1,078,000

Earlier this year, NPR calculated the cost of making a hit record. They did this by polling a group industry executives using Rihanna’s “Man Down” as an example. The results were staggering – from the perspective of most indie musicians, anyway.

Interestingly, a majority of the cost went to “roll out” (marketing) expenses, suggesting that (as Digital Music News postulates) “getting mainstream radio rotation is virtually impossible these days without major label backing.” All of which makes Headliner seem like a pretty good deal, if we do say so ourselves.

    How To: Withdraw A Promotion

We try to make the process of creating a promotion as easy as possible. But we know that sometimes mistakes happen. Maybe you spelled your band name wrong; maybe you forgot to include a link, or included a bad link; maybe you just had a new, better idea. For whatever you find yourself not happy with the promotion you have started. What are your options? Let it run as is and keep spending your Band Bucks are the promotion is accepted and posted? Or stop it and start over? At the moment, the best option for users that are not happy with the promotion they’ve created is to WITHDRAW THIS PROMOTION.

Withdrawing a promotion is easy and it will stop the process of submitting your request for approval, saving you the expense of misspent Band Bucks or sparing you the potential embarrassment of making the wrong impression on a new audience. The steps below show you how.

    1. Go to the My Promotions tab.
    2. Find the Promotion in question.
    3. Look for the promo information under the message – Fan Reach, Recommendations, Band Bucks Used. This data will appear in the lower left corner of each Promotion.
    4. Look for a link labeled: WITHDRAW THIS PROMOTION and click on it.
    5. The promotion is now stopped and you will see a status update in red: WITHDRAWN.

Once your promotion is stopped, Headliner will no longer submit your request to the community. However, any requests that were accepted will be tagged with a posting date and will be shared as originally requested. If you’re a regular member, you can now create a new promotion, being careful to include all the correct information.

As always, if you have any questions, let us know and we’ll be happy to help you.

Google+ Pages and Bands = Search Results, Direct Connect

Billboard posted an article today on how bands can use Google + Pages to improve their presence on the social web and in search results. If you’re already on Facebook, Twitter, Myspace and other networks, you may wonder how and why a Google + Page might help your band. Glenn Peoples makes a couple of good points. Not only are you likely to get better search results, but G+ is offering a feature called Direct Connect that will take users searching for a band directly to their page, making the process of finding and connecting with artists easy.

    Via Billboard.biz:

“Google+ Pages has two things that its peers can’t match: Google’s dominance in search and a new feature called Direct Connect. Google says it will include Google+ pages in search results. That’s hardly a surprise, but what remains to be seen is how prominent Google+ pages will be in search results.

Direct Connect will allow Google search users to immediately find a Google+ page by typing “+” followed by the page of interest. For example, typing “+ Pepsi” will take the searcher directly to Pepsi’s Google+ page without listing the search results. As a result, the consumer follows a shorter path to the brand or business’s page.”

There’s more at Billboard.biz and the Google blog.

Check the video below for an overview of Direct Connect.
