    Music: Killing it on Twitter

2009 saw an absolute explosion of activity on Twitter, propelling it from a semi-obscure social networking site into a media giant. Music was a big part of that, and Twitter’s year end recap of the most tweeted about people and hashtags proves it. #musicmonday, the hashtag for users sharing their favorite tracks every Monday, was the year’s most popular hashtag while #SXSW the hashtag for  Austin’s influential indie fest took third. Meanwhile, Michael Jackson, Susan Boyle and Adam Lambert made a clean podium sweep for music as the most tweeted about people of the year.

Illegal Downloading: Not Going Anywhere Anytime Soon

New online services like Spotify and Vimeo aim to curb illegal downloading by encouraging music lovers to stream music and videos legally. But why would anyone stream music when they can own it? A new British survey regarding the habits of music consumers in the UK seems to suggest “they wouldn’t.” When asked about their plans for downloading in the future, the majority of illegal downloaders answered that they planned to download more, rather than less, in the face of Spotify’s highly publicized UK debut. An Ad-supported, legal, downloading site seems to be years in the future, but clearly the true market value of digital music is much lower than major labels would like us to believe. Check out more information on the survey here.
